MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Eradicating poverty and hunger with the aim of contributing to human development; achieving universal primary education; promoting gender equality and empowering women; reducing child mortality; improving maternal health; combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other infectious diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, and developing a global partnership for development together make up the Millennium Development Goals. There are indicators set for each of these goals to monitor the progress and each country has promised to work on these goals with the aim of contributing to their achievement at global level by 2015. Turkey has the potential to achieve and even go beyond these goals. Nevertheless, there are some challenges ahead and eradication of poverty and hunger, gender equality, reducing child mortality, and improving maternal health remain as primary areas of improvement for Turkey. Through its work and projects, the UN provides support to the Turkish Government in achieving these goals.
